Truman Doctrine
-U.S will help any country in danger of being communist like Iraq, North Korea, Nam
Containment Policy
- United States policy using military, economic and diplomatic strategies to stall the spread of communism. Bay of Pigs Invasion & Similarities with Panama
Bay of Pigs Invasion
-tried to get Castro out of power
-surprise attack, but somehow Castro and his army were waiting
-CIA trained anti-Castro forces in Florida
-U.S defeated in 3 days
Intervention
-In Vietnam we sent troops to help fight; we didn't really want to get our military involved in Korea so we sent financial aid and support to fight communism without getting physical.
Cold War Development
-post WWII, Germany and Berlin split between allies
-Soviets were communist, made us uneasy and caused tension
-Formed NATO to isolate Soviets, they countered with the Warsaw Pact
-Berlin Blockade/Airlift
-Soviets required atomic bomb
War Powers Act
-President cannot use military force without congress approval*
*except for a national emergency like an attack on the U.S (9/11)
-48 hours to notify congress and can only use military for 30 days
-However, congress can extend time
WWII Policy vs. Post WWII Policy
Before WWII, the U.S policy was isolation; we tried to stay our of foreign affairs and focus on building up our economy. After the war our policy began to intervene and get more involved with countries in need of help

-using the most limited amount of resources and manpower to fight a war
Examples of Containment in Europe
The Berlin wall which separated West Germany from Communist East Germany. The US wanted to stop the spread of communism to other countries in Europe.

-East and West Germany
-split between U.S, Britain, France, and Russia, the Allied Powers
-divided Berlin the capital in the same way
-this divide was a major cause of the conflict and tension in the Cold War that ensued
-Berlin Airlift
Douglas MacArthur Dismissal
-fought in WWI, WWII, and Korea
-was a general for the president
-instead of trying to establish a border and make peace between North and South Korea, he launched an invasion of the North and bombed China
-Truman believed that he was after power, and was dismissed
Nuclear Test Ban
-In August 1963, nuclear powers agreed to stop testing nuclear weapons. Many, including the U.S. do not follow this ban, regardless of signing it.
End of Cold War
-the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked the end of the Cold War
Domino Theory
-once one country becomes communist, it spreads rapidly like dominoes

-tried to ease tensions between the U.S and the Soviets

I am an African-American student
I wonder why white people hate me so much
I hear them yelling at me

I pretend to be strong and neveer concerned, but
I feel my heart pounding inside of my chest.
I need to feel that I am accepted by them.
I worry that I will never be safe while I am in this place.
I cry only when I am at home, so I always seem to be very strong but still
I am a member of the Little Rock

I understand they might have opposing views about what they call my kind,
I believe that it can all change if they give us a chance
I dream of this all going away and the world being just one
I try to never show my weaknesses
I hope that one day, people will see that we are all of the same kind, not against each other

I can infer that mom's are the mosrt likely parent to go to college and finish school. In my case it is not like that, my dad finish college but he has no influece in my dad so it is just as if only my mom history would count and she was only able to start college b ut ever finished it. Many parents are like that, they get to start but never finish.

Martin Luther King

In my opinion MLK ways were a lot more effective the Malcom X's ideas of getting his point across. Martin Luther King was a me who believed in peace war, he knew that by not fighting back with violence but with love he would get what he was asking for. Malcom X in the other hand believes in violence if you were being violated, he mind was set on hittikng whoever hit yuou and humiliating whoever humiliagted you. I think the MLK had the better strategy because if someone hits you and you respond with a hug then they will be shocked and won't know what to do, but if you hit them back you will justbe giving them what they were e0ecting from you.

Meritocracy

The ideology of this term i belive is right when it comes to the people who work for money. When it comes to school it is ot always the same situation because not everyone has the same chances. Maybe at some point yeah it is the same oportuneties but not everone can take advantage of them as other students. For example, everyone can go to a private college when they graduate high school as long as they meet the requiremets the school has, which everyone can meet if they can focus on their school work and make it their main priority but not everyone can do that. Many people have to be the parent of the parent, may others worry about money, and other just get the attention from their parents to focus in school. So yes, working hard will give you the American dream, if and only if we really all had the same opportunity and lived under the same circumstaces.

Television.

In my opinion, television is one of the biggest influences in a teeagers life. The t.v is used for many different purposes, people use it to inform themselves about what happends all over the world, or for entertaintment, or simply just as a hobby. In my house everyone owns a television in the room plus the common one we have in the family room, unlike in the old times no we have flat screes, three dimension, and HD t.v's. All the shows that a teen can watch there can influence them to a bad behaavior, sexual exposion, or even their sxual orientation. Sometimes t.v. makes situations okay, that to what people believe in is not okay. In the other side it is really up to each individual to what they watch and how they take what they see on t.v.

McCarthyism:
-House Committee of Un-merican Activities
-many are convicted and it was hard for them to get away with it in court
-propaganda in films on communism
-McCarthy accused Department of State of harboring Communists
-Hollywood most famous writer , producers

Communist "witch hunt":
-For no reason, invaded the lives of many Americans
-supported by anti-Communist groups
-checked the Coast Guards as well as homosexuals.
-People in entertainment feild we imprisoned thousands lost their jobs.

Space Race impact on government policies
-Scared americans after the launch of Sputnik1.
-This caused the government increased the funding for education.

Cold War mind set for the United States Government and public
-The people were afraid of communist infiltration and un-american activities.
-It is normal to be scared, but people took it to a different level.

Relationship of suburbs, automobiles, and roads:
-Suburbs away from cities, quieter less hectic.
-More reliance on cars to go places faster.
-1956 Interstate Highway Act
-Able to live out of the busy cities but still work in the city.

Baby Boom:
-Men came home from war to their wives, had children
-1946-1960
-caused by ending the 20 year Depression and Wartime
-removal of social and economic restraints that kept people from having families
-We wat Everything.!
-The norm = more than 1 family vehicle, 2 kids, dad works, mom stays at home
-causing current social security issues

Urban-Suburban Pattern
-the city is where low income classes live, although the business district within the city also has high class residents
-the suburbs are separated into two groups
-the houses closer to the city are for middle income families and the houses further away are relatively larger and also house higher income families

GI Bill
-if you sign up to join the military and complete your training, your college tuition will all be paid by the government
-basically is you give the military four years, they give you four years

Expansion of Middle Class:
-low prices on goods
-the invention of the credit card, which skyrocketed the amount of spending done around the U.S.
